# Glossary: English, French, Arabic

Contracts in Morocco are written in French or Arabic. This glossary gives each term in three languages, so that you can recognise it on your contract and use it at the counter.

Type a word in any of the three languages to filter the list.

| English | Français | العربية | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACAPS | ACAPS | هيئة مراقبة التأمينات والاحتياط الاجتماعي | The regulator of insurance and social-welfare schemes. It licenses insurers and intermediaries and receives complaints. |
| Accident report form | Constat amiable | المعاينة الودية للحادثة | The two-part form that both drivers fill in and sign after a collision with material damage only. It records facts; signing it is not an admission of fault. |
| Advance | Avance | التسبيق | A loan the life insurer grants on your own savings contract, without ending it. It bears interest and must be repaid. |
| Agent | Agent d'assurance | وكيل التأمين | An intermediary who represents one insurer and sells its contracts. The insurer answers for the agent's acts. |
| Aggravation of risk | Aggravation du risque | تفاقم الخطر | A change that makes a loss more likely than when you signed, for example a private car now used as a taxi. You must tell the insurer, who may adjust the premium. |
| All-risks cover (Tierce) | Tous risques (Tierce) | التأمين الشامل للسيارة | Motor cover that pays for damage to your own car whoever is at fault, including when no other vehicle is involved. |
| AMO | AMO | التأمين الإجباري الأساسي عن المرض | Assurance Maladie Obligatoire, the compulsory basic health cover. It refunds part of medical costs on the basis of a national tariff. |
| Annuity | Rente | الإيراد | A sum paid at regular intervals, for life or for a set period, instead of a single capital payment. |
| Bancassurance | Bancassurance | التأمين عبر البنوك | Insurance sold by a bank on behalf of an insurer. The contract is with the insurer, not with the bank. |
| Beneficiary | Bénéficiaire | المستفيد | The person who receives the money. In life insurance you name the beneficiary, and can change the name at any time unless they have accepted. |
| Broker | Courtier | سمسار التأمين | An intermediary who works for the customer and can place contracts with several insurers. |
| Cancellation | Résiliation | فسخ العقد | Ending the contract before its term, by you or by the insurer, in the cases and with the notice the law and the contract set. |
| Capitalisation | Capitalisation | الرسملة | A savings contract in which the insurer pays back your contributions plus returns at the end, with no link to the length of a life. |
| Catastrophic event (EVCAT) | Événement catastrophique (EVCAT) | الواقعة الكارثية | An earthquake, flood, tsunami, act of terrorism or riot officially declared catastrophic by order of the Head of Government. The declaration triggers the special guarantee. |
| Ceiling of cover | Plafond de garantie | سقف الضمان | The most the insurer will pay for a claim or for a year, whatever the real loss. |
| Certificate of insurance | Attestation d'assurance | شهادة التأمين | The document that proves a vehicle is insured. Since 1 July 2026 it carries a QR code. Keep it in the vehicle. |
| Claim (loss) | Sinistre | الحادث | The event that triggers the cover: an accident, a fire, a theft, an illness, a death. |
| Claim declaration | Déclaration de sinistre | التصريح بالحادث | Telling the insurer about a loss. The legal time limit is five days from the moment you know of it, unless the contract gives more. |
| Co-payment | Ticket modérateur | الجزء الباقي على عاتق المؤمَّن له | The share of the reference tariff that AMO does not refund, for example 30% when the rate is 70%. |
| Collision damage cover | Dommages collision | أضرار الاصطدام | Motor cover that pays for damage to your car in a collision with an identified vehicle, pedestrian or animal. Cheaper and narrower than all-risks. |
| Complementary health cover | Complémentaire santé | التأمين الصحي التكميلي | Private insurance or a mutual that pays part of what AMO leaves to you. |
| Cover note | Note de couverture | مذكرة التغطية | A short document that proves you are covered while the full contract is being drawn up. |
| CRM (reduction and surcharge) | CRM (bonus-malus) | معامل التخفيض والزيادة | Coefficient de réduction-majoration. The market-wide record that lowers a driver's liability premium by 10% after 24 months without an at-fault accident and raises it after one. |
| Deductible (excess) | Franchise | الخلوص | The part of each loss that stays with you. A higher deductible lowers the premium and removes small claims. |
| Defence and recourse | Défense et recours | الدفاع والرجوع | Cover under which the insurer pays the lawyer who defends you, or who claims compensation for you from the person at fault. |
| Dependant | Ayant droit | ذوو الحقوق | A family member covered through the insured person: spouse, children up to 21, students up to 26, disabled children with no age limit. |
| Direct compensation (CID) | Convention d'indemnisation directe (CID) | اتفاقية التعويض المباشر | An agreement between insurers under which your own insurer pays for the damage to your car when the other driver is at fault, then recovers the money itself. |
| Endorsement | Avenant | ملحق العقد | A written change to the contract: new address, new vehicle, added guarantee. Nothing is changed until it is issued. |
| Exclusion | Exclusion | الاستثناء | A situation the contract does not cover. By law it must be printed in very apparent characters to be valid. |
| FGAC | FGAC | صندوق ضمان حوادث السير | Fonds de Garantie des Accidents de la Circulation. It pays for bodily injury when the driver at fault is unknown, or uninsured and insolvent. |
| Forfeiture | Déchéance | سقوط الحق | Losing the right to be paid for one claim because you broke a duty after the loss, such as declaring very late. It must be written in the contract. |
| Formal notice | Mise en demeure | الإنذار | The registered letter an insurer sends when a premium is unpaid. Cover can be suspended 20 days after it. |
| Frontier insurance | Assurance aux frontières | تأمين الحدود | Short-term liability cover sold at the border for a foreign-registered vehicle whose own insurance is not valid in Morocco. |
| FSEC | FSEC | صندوق التضامن ضد الوقائع الكارثية | Fonds de Solidarité contre les Événements Catastrophiques. It compensates uninsured victims for injuries and for the loss of their main home. |
| General and special conditions | Conditions générales et particulières | الشروط العامة والشروط الخاصة | The two parts of a contract. General conditions are the same for everyone; special conditions describe you, your property, your guarantees, sums and deductibles, and they prevail. |
| Green card | Carte verte | البطاقة الخضراء | The international motor insurance certificate. It proves liability cover in the countries listed on it; Morocco is marked MA. |
| Guarantee (cover) | Garantie | الضمان | One risk the contract covers: theft, fire, glass breakage, liability. A contract is a bundle of guarantees, each with its own limits. |
| Insured | Assuré | المؤمَّن له | The person whose life, health, property or liability is covered. Not always the person who signs and pays. |
| Intermediary | Intermédiaire d'assurance | وسيط التأمين | An agent or a broker licensed by ACAPS to sell insurance. Banks and some payment companies may also sell certain contracts. |
| Liability (RC) | Responsabilité civile (RC) | المسؤولية المدنية | Your legal duty to make good the harm you cause to others. Liability insurance pays the victims in your place. |

| Loss adjuster | Expert | الخبير | The specialist the insurer appoints to assess the damage and its cost. You may appoint your own for a second opinion. |
| Multiple insurance | Assurances cumulatives | تعدد التأمينات | Insuring the same property against the same risk with several insurers. You must tell each of them, and together they never pay more than the loss. |

| Policyholder | Souscripteur | المكتتب | The person who signs the contract and pays the premium. Can be different from the insured, as when a parent insures a child. |
