# Moroccans abroad, visitors and foreign residents

If you live outside Morocco, or have come to live in it, your insurance sits between two countries. Four questions matter most: your car at the border, your health during the stay, your home when it is empty, and what happens if someone dies far from home.

## Key facts

- **Status:** Compulsory for vehicles
- **Who needs it:** Moroccans living abroad, tourists, and foreigners who live or work in Morocco
- **Legal basis:** Insurance Code (law 17-99), article 121, for vehicles registered abroad
- **Where to get it:** Frontier insurance: counters at every border post. Assistance contracts: banks, assistance companies and online
- **Key deadline:** Check your green card before you leave: the letters MA must not be crossed out

## Coming to Morocco by car

A vehicle registered abroad must be insured for liability from the moment it enters Morocco. There are three ways to prove it.

| Proof | How it works |
|---|---|
| Green card | The international certificate issued by your own insurer. It is valid in Morocco only if the box marked MA is not crossed out |
| Orange card | The equivalent certificate used between Arab countries |
| Frontier insurance | A Moroccan liability contract bought on arrival, when your own insurance does not cover Morocco |

**Frontier insurance** is sold by CAT at counters open day and night at every border post. You need the vehicle's registration document, your identity document and the customs paper for temporary import. It is sold for 5 days, 10 days, 1 month, 3 months or 6 months and can be renewed. The tariff is fixed and displayed at the counter.

Three points to check before the journey:

- **Liability only.** A green card or frontier insurance pays the people you harm. Theft and damage to your own car are covered only if your home insurer extends those guarantees to Morocco. Ask for the answer in writing.
- **Assistance.** Many European breakdown contracts stop at the Spanish coast. An assistance contract for Moroccans abroad fills the gap.
- **Length of stay.** Customs allow a foreign vehicle to stay for a limited time each year. Keep your insurance valid for the whole stay, and renew frontier insurance before it expires.

### An accident in Morocco with a foreign vehicle

Follow the same steps as any driver: see [after an accident](https://assurlik.com/en/car-insurance/#after-an-accident). Fill in the accident report form with the other driver, get the police report number if someone is injured, and declare the accident to your own insurer at once. Claims against vehicles covered by a green card are handled in Morocco by the Bureau Central Marocain, the BCMA, in Casablanca.

## Repatriation and assistance contracts

Bringing a body back to Morocco costs several thousand euros and requires formalities in two countries. Assistance contracts designed for Moroccans living abroad organise and pay for it. The best known are Injad Achamil from Maroc Assistance Internationale, Injad Sans Frontière from Wafa IMA Assistance, and Barid Injad MRE sold by Al Barid Bank.

| Service | What is usually included |
|---|---|
| Death | Repatriation of the body to the place of burial in Morocco, and a ticket for a relative who accompanies it |
| Illness or accident | Medical transport and help during stays in Morocco or on the journey |
| Vehicle | Towing after a breakdown or accident on the way, and return of the passengers |
| Family events | An early return ticket if a close relative dies in Morocco |

Prices start at about 210 MAD a year for a single person and rise with the number of people covered and with vehicle assistance.

### Before you sign

- [ ] Who is covered: spouse, children up to what age, parents who live with you
- [ ] The age limit for joining, and any waiting period before the death guarantee applies
- [ ] The countries of residence and of travel that are accepted
- [ ] Whether the vehicle is included, and up to what age of vehicle
- [ ] The number to call, from abroad and from Morocco

> **Watch out.** These contracts provide assistance. They are not health insurance and do not pay ordinary medical bills.

## Your home in Morocco

A home that stays empty for months is a different risk from one that is lived in.

- **The vacancy clause.** Many contracts suspend theft cover, and sometimes other guarantees, when the home is unoccupied beyond a set period, often 90 days in a row. Tell the insurer how the home is used and ask for a contract that accepts long absences.
- **Water.** Turn off the supply when you leave and have someone visit regularly. A leak that runs for weeks can be refused as a lack of care.
- **Someone on the spot.** A claim must be declared within 5 days. Give a relative or the managing agent a copy of the contract and a written authority to act.
- **Payment.** Pay the premium by standing order from a Moroccan account, so that cover is not suspended while you are away.
- **Letting.** If the home is rented, even for short stays, you need a landlord's contract and the use must be declared.

A second home is not compensated by the public solidarity fund after an earthquake or a flood. Only an insurance contract protects it: see [if you are not insured](https://assurlik.com/en/earthquake-flood-insurance/#if-you-are-not-insured).

## Health care during your stay

- **Your foreign public cover.** Morocco has social-security agreements with several European countries. Depending on the agreement, urgent care during a temporary stay can be covered if you bring the form issued by your fund before you leave. Ask your fund several weeks ahead.
- **The European Health Insurance Card** is not valid in Morocco.
- **Private cover.** Travel insurance from your country of residence, or the medical guarantees of an assistance contract, pay for emergencies within their ceilings.
- **In practice.** Private clinics ask for payment or a guarantee before admission. Keep every invoice and medical report: you will need them to claim at home.

Relatives who live in Morocco have their own rights. Parents without cover can register with the Registre Social Unifié for AMO Tadamon or AMO Achamil: see [which AMO scheme are you in?](https://assurlik.com/en/health-insurance-amo/#which-amo-scheme-are-you-in).

## Foreign residents and visitors

- **Visitors.** Travel insurance is not a general condition for entering Morocco, but it is strongly recommended. Check that it covers medical evacuation and the activities you plan.
- **Employees.** A foreigner with a Moroccan employment contract is registered with CNSS and covered by AMO like any other employee. Staff posted for a limited time may stay in their home scheme under a social-security agreement.
- **Self-employed and business owners.** The rules for non-salaried workers apply: see [which AMO scheme are you in?](https://assurlik.com/en/health-insurance-amo/#which-amo-scheme-are-you-in).
- **Retired and non-working residents.** You need private cover. The choice is between an individual contract with a Moroccan insurer, which has age limits for joining, and an international health policy.
- **Cars and homes.** The rules are the same as for everyone. Risks located in Morocco must as a rule be insured with an insurer licensed in Morocco, so a home policy bought abroad cannot cover a property here.

Contracts are written in French or Arabic. Ask for an explanation of anything you do not understand before you sign. A summary in another language does not replace the contract.

## Questions

### My insurer abroad says Morocco is excluded from my green card. What do I do?

Ask whether it can add Morocco for an extra premium. If not, buy frontier insurance at the border post when you arrive.

### How long can I drive on frontier insurance?

Contracts run from 5 days to 6 months and can be renewed. The insurance must remain valid for as long as the vehicle is in Morocco.

### Can I buy all-risks cover in Morocco for my foreign-registered car?

Frontier insurance is liability cover. For damage and theft, the usual route is an extension from your home insurer. Ask before you travel.

### I live abroad. Can I join AMO?

AMO is for people who live in Morocco or contribute to a Moroccan scheme. During visits you rely on your foreign cover, an agreement between the two countries, or private insurance.

### A relative died abroad and had no assistance contract. Who can help?

Contact the Moroccan consulate at once. It guides the family through the formalities and can say what public help exists for families without resources.

### I let my flat to tourists while I am away. Is my home policy enough?

No. Short lets must be declared to the insurer, and an ordinary home policy can refuse a claim linked to an undeclared rental.
